Dr. Kilgore has served as a physician associate/assistant since graduating from the Emory University Physician Associate Program in December 1981. He has clinically practiced Nephrology, Hematology/Oncology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Military Medicine. His experience has covered a wide variety of practice settings from outpatient clinics, large medical centers, multispecialty practices, and complex dialysis centers. He has spent almost his career participating in clinical research. He participated in cutting edge research in non-sedating antiemetics, development of erythropoietin, antihypertensives, antidiabetic medications and vaccine development including leading studies in H1N1, High Dose Influenza and Dengue Fever vaccines. He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of a Pharmaceutical Research Corporation for over 14 years.
Dr. Kilgore has a long and distinguished career in medical education including serving as the Program Director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Physician Assistant Program and the Mississippi State University – Meridian Campus Master of Physician Assistant Studies program. While serving in the UAB role he led the development of the coordinated Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and Master of Public Health (MSPAS/MPH) dual degree program within the program.
Dr. Kilgore also has a long career as a lecturer at Emory University, Morehouse University, Mercer University, University of South Alabama, and Chapman University PA Programs. As an associate professor at the University of Lynchburg School of Medicine and Health Science he led Behavioral Medicine and Addiction Medicine Concentrations and served as a faculty member of the Master of Healthcare Administration, Master of Physician Assistant Medicine program, Doctor of Medial Science and Doctor of Executive Leadership at the university.
Dr. Kilgore has published numerous articles and in 2025 “Characteristics and Career Impact on Physician Assistant/Associate Graduates of a Doctor of Medical Science Program” published in the Journal of the AAPA was awarded the AAPA 2025 Publishing Award. He has served in many leadership positions within the PA profession. This includes serving as the President of the Alabama Society of Physician Assistants, on the BOD of the AAPA, Chair of the AAPA PAC and President of the PA Foundation. He has served nationally on numerous commissions and committees. He is currently the President of the Academy of Doctoral PAs.
Dr. Kilgore currently practices as a volunteer primary care medical provider and Medical Director for a free and charitable medical clinic for indigent and disadvantaged individuals. He is a Lt. Col. in the USAF-Auxiliary [CAP] where he served as the Director of Personnel and Administration for the Southeast Region (AL, MS, TN, GA, FL, and PR) and is currently a Health Services Officer for the Region. He is a licensed fixed wing pilot and sUAS (drone) pilot, check-pilot, and instructor.
